Why We Chose a Smaller Space: Building Meaningful Connections at DAZI

When designing Discovery & Adventure Zone Inc. (DAZI), our founders, Rosetta and Michelle, made a conscious decision to create an intimate, home-like environment rather than opting for a larger, busier setting. While some childcare centers in town have more expansive spaces, they envisioned a place where every child feels truly known and valued—a space that nurtures relationships, security, and a sense of belonging.
With a smaller space comes a smaller complement of staff, which is an intentional choice. This means every educator gets to know each child—not just their name, but their unique personality, preferences, and needs. Children, in turn, form relationships with all staff members, rather than just a select few, fostering familiarity and emotional security.
This setup also strengthens connections between families and educators. Parents aren’t just dropping their children off at a center; they are becoming part of a close-knit community where their child’s growth and well-being are deeply understood and supported. Conversations between staff and families can be more meaningful, creating a collaborative experience in each child’s early learning journey.
Of course, maintaining a small, intimate setting comes with its challenges. With fewer staff, teamwork and communication are essential to ensuring a dynamic and enriching environment. But Rosetta and Michelle believe the benefits far outweigh the challenges—because at DAZI, we’re not just a childcare program. We’re a community built on trust, relationships, and the belief that children thrive best when they are truly known and loved.
